Any serious business in today’s digital world will have a website.  It should look professional and offer a selection of properties with prices, location and relevant contact information.  Links to social media accounts should be displayed.  This allows you to obtain an overall idea of what type properties they represent, their location and number.

Anyone can create their own website and work off a laptop in an internet café. However, a serious vacation rental company in Playa del Carmen should have a centrally-located office.  Please think twice before selecting someone who does not have an office.  They may not have the resources or motivation to properly oversee your investment.

3. Verify that they have a local phone number.

Playa del Carmen’s local area code is 984 or 998.  Any reputable business should have a number with one of these area codes.  Please ask as many companies offer both a USA or Toll Free number in addition to a local number.  If they don’t have a 984 or 998 extension, this may mean they are either new to the area, don’t live here or may plan on moving away soon.  It’s imperative to find someone who is local, has lived here for at least 5 years and plans on staying for the duration.

5. Check out the company’s reviews online.

Verify a business’ ratings on Google, Yelp, Facebook and Trip Advisor.  For example, a reputable company will have a Facebook page as part of their social media marketing.  Visit the reviews section to determine their ratings. Too many negative reviews or comments reflects poorly.

If possible, visit Playa del Carmen and stay in one of their units.  Determine if the rental unit is well-maintained and clean.  If it’s not this could be a sign of future problems.

Does it appear like they hired a professional to design their ads and videos? A good company can afford to hire quality designers and artists for their digital marketing. The same applies to billboards, which indicate a serious intent to gain business. Inspect the included information for inconsistency and any contradictions. These may be signs of something wrong.

8. Verify they have a legitimate Mexican business.

A reputable Playa del Carmen management company will have a certified Mexican company registered to perform property administration and rentals in Mexico.  You can ask to see the company’s formation documents.  If they have a Mexican company, this means they are most likely paying Mexican taxes.  Any property being rented and not paying taxes could risk serious fines and possible seizure by the Mexican government.
