Transportation Options in Playa Del Carmen
How to use Taxis, Buses, Colectivos, and ADO
As visitors in our city, whether short or long term, will need at some point to find a way to go from one location to another. It might be for grocery shopping, a shopping mall, a day trip to a nearby beach, or a longer journey to a nearby city.
Whatever your needs may be, we provide you the primary ways of transportation to move around the city and beyond, with information on prices, where to find them, and the advantages of each one.

Notice: There is no Uber or Lyft service in Playa
You can easily find a taxi in Playa del Carmen everywhere you go, making them a convenient way to move into town. Unlike the US and Canada, taxis here do not use meters but charge a flat rate based on zones. A typical taxi ride costs at least $35 pesos and can go as high as $100 pesos if you take one to a residential area within the city. Be aware that rates to Playacar hotel areas can cost between $100-150 pesos for tourists. Be sure to ask for the price to your destination before jumping in.
You can stop a taxi on the street or take one in one of the several Taxi stands around the city, such as the ADO bus station on Juarez Avenue, at the different shopping malls, and across 5th Avenue. Be aware that taxis from a standing charge a higher rate, but this is helpful if you need one after shopping.
Extra Tip: If you have enough time to ask more than one taxi driver for the fare before getting in, or if you're traveling with a local or someone that speaks Spanish, make them ask like they were locals, “sometimes” the fares can change between foreigners and locals.

2. Buses
Public buses are by far the cheapest way to move around Playa del Carmen. Though used mainly by locals, their main advantage is their low cost. The downside is that they move pretty slow, so it's not ideal if you are in a hurry or plan on coming home with your grocery shopping.
The primary public buses are the Tucsa, which can be boarded downtown on 2nd Street, between 25th and 30th Avenues. You pay the driver when you get on. Then, when you are close to your destination, walk to the rear of the bus, press the buzzer, and the driver will stop the bus at the next bus stop. These buses have their routes written on the windshield, so if you are going somewhere, check here first, and then confirm with the driver that it is indeed going to your destination.
Notice: The bus price is $7-10 pesos depending on the route, equivalent to ¢25 cents of USD. Make sure to pay in pesos as they don’t accept foreign currencies and try to bring coins; sometimes, they don’t have change for big bills.

3. Colectivo Vans in the city
Almost every bus and colectivo travels across Playa Del Carmen downtown by 30th Avenue and then goes to different neighborhoods. So taking a colectivo is a good idea if you want to cover several blocks quickly.
To catch a colectivo, look for the sign on the sidewalk with a sign displaying: Paradero Servicio Urbano (Urban Service Stop). The colectivos also begin and end their routes on 20th Avenue and Juarez Avenue, so this is an excellent place to board one if you are nearby.
Be sure to check the destination on the windshield. If you are not sure about the destination, you can ask the driver before getting on.
The price range depending on the area is $7-10 pesos. (¢35 - ¢45 of USD) Make sure to pay in pesos as they don’t accept foreign currencies and try to bring coins, as sometimes they don’t have change for big bills.

4. Colectivos to Tulum and Cancun
Some colectivos vans provide transportation between Playa del Carmen and destinations along the highway. There are two routes of colectivos from Playa Del Carmen: One goes to Tulum, and the other one goes to Cancun.
Colectivos cost around $25-65 pesos ($1 - 2.82 USD), depending on distance, for a single journey. Make sure to pay in pesos as they don’t accept foreign currencies and try to bring coins; sometimes they don’t have change for big bills.
Like the colectivos in the city, there are a few seats available, so it's better to take one from the colectivos stops downtown at 2nd street and 50 Ave / Highway 307 below the overpass.
These colectivos are the cheapest way to travel to Cancun or Tulum and the different cenotes and beaches along the highway. Plus, they have A/C.
If you need to stop in the middle of the highway to visit a cenote or some community on the way, you can get another van back opposite to the spot where you were dropped initially. Be patient; they can delay between 15 - 30 mins or be full, so you may have to wait for the next one.

5. ADO Buses
The most affordable transportation you can take from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen is the ADO bus. These buses leave about every 30 minutes and arrive in Playa Del Carmen at Juarez Avenue and 5th Avenue. The trip takes about one hour, and the only stop along the way is at Puerto Morelos, a town between Cancun Airport and Playa del Carmen. They are very reliable and comfortable. They have air conditioning and TV monitors showing films.
Forgoing to Cancun Airport, you can also take an ADO bus. There are two ADO stations in Playa del Carmen. One is located on 12th street and 20th Avenue and the other is at Juarez Avenue and 5th Avenue.
Though the ADO website is in Spanish only and usually only accepts Mexican credit cards for booking, it can be useful to check up the schedules. In addition, you can purchase the tickets at the station on the same day, but better get them some hours in advance.
Because these buses go to many towns in the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula, they are ideal for traveling within the region. For example, if you wish to explore a nearby city like Valladolid or Merida, this is an excellent way to go.

Opciones de transporte en Playa del Carmen
Cómo utilizar los taxis, camiones, colectivos y ADO.
Como visitante de esta ciudad, ya sea por corto o largo tiempo, necesitará en algún punto alguna forma para ir de un lugar a otro. Quizá yendo a comprar sus víveres, a algún centro comercial, a visitar alguna playa aledaña, o a alguna ciudad cercana.
Sea cual sea su necesidad, estos son los medios principales para su transportación dentro de la ciudad y más allá, con información sobre precios, donde tomar el transporte y las ventajas de cada medio.

1. Taxis
Nota: No hay servicio de Uber u otra aplicación similar en playa.
A donde quiera que vaya, fácilmente encontrará un taxi en Playa del Carmen. Lo cual resulta ser una forma conveniente para moverse en la ciudad. A diferencia de Estados Unidos, Canadá y algunas ciudades, aquí no se utiliza taxímetro, se cobra una tarifa establecida basada en la zona. Un viaje en taxi típicamente cuesta $35 pesos o lo más caro podría costar $100 pesos si lo toma hacia una zona residencial desde la ciudad. Tome en cuenta que las tarifas a los hoteles dentro de Playacar pueden variar entre $100-150 pesos para los turistas. Asegúrese de preguntar la tarifa antes de subirse.
Usted puede parar un taxi en la ciudad o tomarlo desde los diferentes sitios de taxi alrededor de la ciudad, como la estación de ADO en la avenida Juárez, diferentes centros comerciales y a lo largo de la 5ta avenida. Considere que estos sitios de taxi cobran una tarifa más alta, pero pueden ser útiles por su comodidad después de ir de compras.
Tip extra: En caso de contar con tiempo extra sugerimos preguntar a más de un conductor de taxi para comparar las tarifas antes de subirse, algunas veces las tarifas pueden ser distintas para los foráneos y los locales al ser zona turística.

2. Autobuses
Los autobuses de transporte público son el medio más barato para desplazarse en Playa del Carmen. Son el medio más usado por los locales, debido a su bajo costo. Es considerado un medio de transporte lento, ya que hace muchas paradas, por lo que no son recomendables en caso de que usted tenga prisa para llegar a su destino.
Los autobuses tienen un distintivo que dice: Tucsa, los cuales pueden ser abordados en la 2da calle entre la avenida 25 y 30. Usted debe pagar al conductor al momento de abordar. Cuando usted esté cerca de su destino debe presionar el interruptor más cercano a usted en la parte superior de la unidad para anunciar su parada al conductor. Estos autobuses generalmente tienen sus rutas escritas en el parabrisas, por lo que antes de viajar revise, y confirme con el conductor para asegurarse de que va en la ruta correcta.

3. Colectivos dentro de la ciudad
Casi todos los colectivos de Playa del Carmen cruzan por la avenida 30 en el centro y de ahí parten a diferentes zonas de la ciudad. Por lo que tomar un colectivo es una buena opción en caso de que usted desee recorrer varias cuadras rápidamente.
Para tomar un colectivo busque en la calle un letrero con la señal de Paradero Servicio Urbano. Los colectivos por lo general inician o terminan sus rutas en la avenida 20 y Avenida Juárez, por lo que resulta ser una excelente opción de movilidad si usted está cerca de un paradero.
Asegúrese de revisar su destino, traen su ruta escrita en el parabrisas. En caso de no estar seguro del destino, pregunte al conductor antes de abordar.

4. Colectivos de Tulum a Cancún
Algunos colectivos proveen de transporte entre Playa del Carmen y algunos destinos a lo largo de la carretera. Hay dos rutas entre los colectivos; una va hacia Cancún y la otra hacia Tulum.
Los colectivos cuestan alrededor de $25-65 pesos ($1 - 2.82 dólares USD), dependiendo de la distancia recorrida por un sólo viaje. Asegúrese de pagar en pesos ya que no se aceptan monedas extranjeras, además intente traer monedas, algunas veces los conductores no traen cambio para billetes grandes.
Al igual que los colectivos de la ciudad, estos traen pocos asientos disponibles, por lo que es recomendable tomarlos desde el inicio de la ruta en la calle 2 con avenida 50 / Carretera federal 307, bajo el paso a desnivel.
Estos colectivos son la manera más económica de viajar a Cancún o Tulum, así como a diferentes cenotes y playas a lo largo de la carretera. Además cuentan con aire acondicionado.
En caso de necesitar parar a la mitad de la carretera para visitar algún cenote o alguna comunidad en el camino, usted necesitará tomar otro colectivo de regreso justo frente al punto donde se bajó. Sea paciente, estas pueden tardar entre 15-30 minutos o pueden estar llenas, por lo que deberá esperar a la siguiente.

5. Autobuses ADO
El transporte más económico y conveniente para moverse desde el aeropuerto a Playa del Carmen es el autobús ADO. Estos autobuses parten cada 30 minutos y llegan a Playa del Carmen justo a la 5ta Avenida y avenida Juárez. El viaje toma una hora, y la única parada es en Puerto Morelos, un poblado entre Cancún y Playa del Carmen. Este medio de transporte es muy confiable y cómodo, cuenta con aire acondicionado y monitores con películas durante el trayecto.
Para ir al aeropuerto de Cancún también puede tomar el autobús ADO. Hay dos estaciones en Playa del Carmen. Una está localizada en la calle 12 y la avenida 20, y la otra está ubicada en la 5ta avenida con esquina avenida Juárez.
Usted puede comprar sus boletos con tarjeta de crédito a través de la página de internet de ADO, en caso de que no le sea posible comprar en línea. Usted puede comprar los boletos en la estación en el mismo día, se recomienda comprarlos con algunas horas de anticipación.
Estos autobuses son ideales para viajar a diferentes poblados aledaños a la Riviera Maya y a la península de Yucatán. Si usted desea explorar alguna ciudad cercana como Valladolid o Mérida, este es un gran medio de transporte.
